Enlargement of the spleen e.g. in leukaemia and lymphoma, infection with bacteria or viruses, rheumatic disease, (lysosomal) storage disease. An enlarged spleen may store blood cells and cause a general lack of blood cells (pancytopenia). The underlying disease needs to be treated, and in rare cases the enlarged spleen must be surgically removed.
